With a touch of Fall in the air and all the beautiful colors of the Chrysanthemums in the nurseries it’s a great time for instructions on how to construct the proper way to make some beautiful Autumn arrangements for our homes.
What better way than to have our in-house “Line Designer” and Master Flower Show Judge Linda Ryan to give us some lessons on the proper size vases and the line material height that goes with each of them. There were instructions for short vases with long table arrangements that were very low, good for a center table layout to be able to converse over without having to dodge a tall bouquet…Linda had made one no more than five inches tall, bright buttery yellow sun flowers with their velvety black centers, plenty low enough to see our new President Jennifer Allen behind it.
Line Design or line material can be anything that gives height to your arrangement…the twirled but bare shaved look of a curly willow stick, a tall flower such as a gladiola that can also add color to enhance the entire arrangement or a stem of greenery from the waxy deep green hedge of the holly in your back yard.
When our “classroom” instructions were over, Linda asked if there were any questions, which there weren’t since her education about “Line Design” and the arrangements she had made were so informative we all felt we could hopefully make one on our own!
Before Linda’s talk began Jennifer had asked our Chaplain to lead us in prayer and then we all tendered the Pledge Allegiance. She then asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting that had been emailed to the membership before the meeting.
Following that she asked the Treasurer Phyllis DiBenedetto for her report on the stance of our holdings for HGC. Motion was then made, seconded and accepted by all.
Jennifer then asked for a committee member of the Garden of the Month for a report which was given by Deborah Garafola. She stated that the award had been given to Terry and Alton Lewis at 18026 Ashton Drive in the Ashton Heights Subdivision off Pleasant Ridge Drive. Deborah said the front yard and even the back yard was quite beautiful.
Glenda Nelson was next with her report on The Keep Hammond Beautiful project which she said that there was a meeting on September 13 deciding on October 1, at 8:00 AM there is a pickup scheduled at The African-American Heritage Museum at Phoenix Square. Councilman Kip Andrews is asking anyone in his area to please volunteer just a few hours of your time to make our area beautiful. There would be pickup sticks, bags and gloves supplied. Glenda also asked for people to come to help not only picking up trash but to help distribute the gloves, bags, pick-up sticks, etc.
Pat Graves was called on for any news on the April 2023 Arts in Bloom Gala. Pat said that it is coming along and thinks this year’s production is going to be bigger and better than ever. “Last year was our first year and we have learned a lot. You always learn by your mistakes”, Pat said. “But we are moving along and there will be more news the closer we get to…Lift Off Time”!
The Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. is holding a fundraiser and are asking for new or gently used shoes which some of the members have brought in and will be sent to Deep South hoping to help out nationally as well as our communities and our own city.
Business and educational speaker taken care of we are now on to a wonderful luncheon prepared by Mary Monteleone and crew at the Oak Knoll Country Club. There’s always Specials of the Day Menu or you can order off the main menu…neither of which have we ever been disappointed in. You can go Lite with a salad or great gumbo, fried seafood, sandwiches or hamburgers. I’ve never gotten anything I didn’t like! And the dining room is always decorated so beautifully with long linen tablecloths and flowers. Everything and everybody waiting tables always a delight!
Full tummies time for a motion to adjourn and just visit with friends. Always so much to talk about! And just a little quote I’d like to leave you with since we are entering the wonderful season of Fall with a slight chill in the air and gorgeous blooming flowers:
“As long as Autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.” Vincent van Gogh
