What a Beautiful Day in the HGC Neighborhood
What a beautiful day Mother Nature and God saved for us to have our only outdoor meeting of the year! The sun was shining…..but not so much as it had been! There was a gentle breeze blowing, we didn’t even need the ceiling fans; most things were still green and the few leaves that I saw on the ground were of the same buttery yellow of those in my yard.
We were at the home and gardens of one of our favorite venues, member Lee Collins that graciously lends either her outdoor pavilion with lush gardens all around or inside her beautifully decorated home.
This meeting Lee was even more gracious (not that she isn’t always) but there was a problem that we didn’t know about until 15 minutes before the meeting was to begin. Our caterer, Marilyn had gotten the dates mixed up because of so much going on in her life, and we found out at that time there wasn’t going to be any luncheon provided.
Not to be outdone…..as the speaker began all of a sudden Lee was missing in action! She had gone inside and had, in 15 minutes prepared two beautiful trays with perfectly sliced apples, oranges laced all around with grapes. There were cookies and candy bars sliced in bite size pieces…..it looked like trays that would have been decorated at some swank hotel by a master chef! Thank you Lee for being THE PERFECT HOSTESS!
After President Mary Thornhill called the meeting to order Chaplain Paulette Hebert opened with a beautiful prayer and all members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Mary then called on Linda Ryan to introduce our speaker Carrie Martin who is a National Garden Club Master Flower Show Judge to give a demonstration of her “Design Program”; she has received many awards for creative design. She brought with her four different styles of things that can be added to arrangements making them creatively different. There are things she collects that hold a design together and aren’t necessarily apparent in the arrangement but are still made out of things that are alive which has to be in any arrangement. After answering questions from the membership she was thanked for her very interesting program with a round of applause.
The President then called on the usual reports from Secretary Karen Granier and Treasurer Phyllis DiBenedetto which were read and approved by all. Next were monthly awards. The Garden of the Month for September was awarded to Mr. & Mrs. Bill Morgan on East Charles Street as told by Deborah Garafola and Sylvia Dileo and the one for October awarded by Sue Parrill and Shirley Pellichino went to Matt and Dr. April Sandifer on West Charles Street.
Mary then reminded the members that our December meeting would be held at the Oak Knoll Country Club on December 11 and payment is due at the November meeting.
She then called on Linda Ryan for particulars on our “Road Trip” to Bellingrath Gardens and Home. Linda reported that it was to be on April 8 and a bus would be taking us if there were enough to fill it. She suggested we ask friends and other garden clubs if they would like to join us.
Mary then asked if there was anything else anyone wanted to report and I said yes I wanted to let everybody know that we had someone very special celebrating their birthday today, special because it was member Maisie Parker who was celebrating her 90th birthday! There were others Susie Ivanyisky, Glenda Nelson, Marta Lichtl, Karen Nelson and Jackie Carr, they too were to celebrate theirs this month but none as memorable as that of 90 years of age.
What a pleasant day it was, gorgeous weather, fantastic hostess and friends all around you, who could ask for anything more!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God bless the city of Hammond and God Bless America!
