HAMMOND GARDEN CLUB'S
SEPTEMBER MEETING
Oh my! The Hammond Garden Club ladies are ready to go and are making all kinds of plans for their upcoming year. Our September meeting was held at Oak Knoll Country Club. It was a wonderful venue to usher in our unprecedented ideas. The tables were decorated with beautiful fall (we hope soon) arrangements from the hostesses. They were made by Linda Ryan with ginger cones, sunflowers, orange and gold leaves and greenery; what a colorful start to our new season!
Our President Mary Thornhill opened the meeting and asked Gayle Bornholdt to give the prayer in our Chaplain Paulette Hebert's absence; the Pledge Of Allegiance was then said by all.
Mary then introduced our speaker for the meeting Ginger Tastet, Executive Director of Keep Tangipahoa Beautiful and Litter Coordinator for Tangipahoa Parish. Ginger has been employed by the Parish government for the past eighteen years and gave a marvelous speech on educating children about litter at local schools hoping that they will be positive examples for their parents and peers. She believes that the accreditation directly aids in increasing resources and bettering attractiveness of the Parish, which may ultimately eliminate litter. She also spoke about the times she has made a difference in a child's life as well as teaching them about littering. Her goal is to hopefully in the next four or five years to see a difference in littering our Parish. It was a most enjoyable and informative presentation and Mary announced that the Keep Tangipahoa Beautiful litter clean up this Saturday is at the African American Heritage Museum and our club participating would be a great example of what Ginger's talk was just about.
After hearing the presentation a delicious lunch was served by the ladies of Oak Knoll and I must say looking out on the beautiful green lawns and the swimming pool while eating was such a pleasant place to experience our fabulous meal.
The Secretary Karen Granier distributed the minutes of the August Presidents Tea by email before the meeting and Treasurer Phyllis diBenedetto read the treasurer's report and said that all dues for 2019-20 had been paid. Chairperson Carolyn Todd reported that the recipient of the Garden of the Month was awarded to Yvette and Jacques Levet on West Hoffman Road and thanks to Sue Parrill for writing the newspaper article. There was no report from the Link Award committee.
Old Business taken care of, Mary talked about the upcoming LGCF District VI Fall Meeting and Luncheon scheduled for October 22 at Nottoway Plantation in White Castle. Our member and District VI Director Carolyn Todd had registration forms available for those that hadn't already done so because the registration deadline is September 21. Our club is donating a lovely silver Southern Belle by Phyllis Mire as one of the items for the auction table.
Sitting at the back table was Susie Ivanyisky our Committee Chair for our annual Fundraiser. It is again a Fish Fry prepared by Buie's Magnolia Fundraiser! Everyone liked it so much last year we have been asked when we were going to do another. Well let us not disappoint our customers! It will be held at Cate Square Park, October 18 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Probably the only place that hasn't gone up on the price.....you can still get 5 pieces of fried filet of catfish, french fries, coleslaw and hush puppies for $8.00! You can't beat that! We will deliver to your place of business if there are five or more dinners at no extra charge. If you need tickets please call me Linda Broussard at 985-345-7154 or Karen Nelson at 985-419-2677 or Susie Ivanyisky at 985-974-5554. We have you covered for anywhere around the Hammond area! Please remember this is our annual fundraiser for a Scholarship for some deserving student at Southeastern University.
Lastly door prizes were drawn for the beautiful table arrangements that were won by Phyllis dibenedetto, Clara Houston, Fran Steib, Marta Lichtl and Kathleen Bohlinger.
What a wonderful day it was getting back together with all of our HGC friends laying out plans for the coming year! Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "The only gift is a portion of thyself"! We must all contribute to make this a happy place to be involved!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God bless America and God bless Hammond, Louisiana!
