The Hammond Garden Club has awarded the Garden of the Month of May to Rachel and Michael Rogers of East Charles Street.
The house and garden have been entirely remodeled during the three years that Rachel and Michael have lived there. They personally installed and maintain the gardens.
The approach to the house features dallies, agapanthus, blue salvia, Star Gazer lilies, iris and pink and white vinca. Closer to the house are dwarf Encore azaleas, Shishi camellias, pittosporum, sweet olive, hibiscus and, on each corner, a Japanese magnolia.
Other plants along the sides and rear of the house include Peggy Martin roses, bottle brush, St. Joseph lilies, more dwarf azaleas and magnificent old trees. On the back steps, pots of petunias, geraniums, and begonias provide color for the eye and treats for Michael’s bees.
The house and gardens represent one more example of how Hammond residents are bringing Hammond into the 21st century but keeping the best of the past.
If you are out riding around, pass by the Rogers’ home and garden on East Charles Street; it is a beautiful sight in the City of Hammond and very worthy of our Garden of the Month Award.
