Hammond Garden Club celebrates the holidays
Happy New Year to everyone! Hope this finds you able to relax after all the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and big family and friends celebrations, and I hope you found time for the real reason of the season, to thank Him for all of your blessings!
We at the Hammond Garden Club had so many community obligations (not that we are complaining; it was fun too)! We decorated two Christmas trees, one at the North Oaks Rehab Hospital on Morrison Boulevard and the other belonging also to North Oaks Health System on Robin Avenue.
Then it was over to Cate Square Park to decorate the gazebo! For much of this project we had to get help from our member Sue Parrill’s son Steve who is very capable of climbing tall ladders to hang these huge snowflakes all around the outer edge of that gazebo. He also knows a lot about the electrical part of connecting all those lights together from the top ornamentals to the bottom garlands on the banisters. There are just things the “little old ladies” of the Garden Club need a strong young man to help with, and we thanked him profusely!
When those three projects were completed it was time for our Christmas party at Oak Knoll Country Club. It was decorated so beautifully in gold, black and white, from the tree to the fireplace to the tables. Such perfection! The buffet all across the front of the dining room was filled with three entrees, sides and dessert. So yummy!
Most of the business part of our meeting was deleted on this celebrated occasion except for our President Jennifer Allen asking our Chaplain Mary Thornhill to open our celebration with a prayer and for all to remain standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Jennifer then thanked the members that gave of their time and talents to accomplish the aforementioned community projects.
At that time the buffet was ready and Jennifer delayed the balance of the meeting until lunch had been enjoyed.
Jennifer then called on Carolyn Todd for her report on Garden of the Month. Carolyn told us about the beautiful gardens belonging to winners Grady and Kellie Brame Oak Knoll Estates.
Jennifer asked Linda Ross if there was an award given for the Link Award to which she replied one had not been given this month.
Jennifer then called out the birthdays for the month, and door prizes were also given out.
At this meeting we were supposed to make either a donation of money or canned goods for the needy to Kiwanis Club. It was up to each member which they wanted to contribute.
At the end of the meeting, after the proceeds had been counted by Treasurer Phyllis diBenedetto and given to Jennifer she announced we had collected $550 and many canned goods to donate to Kiwanis. There was a big round of applause from all.
Business out of the way, we tried some fun with a sheet which Jennifer handed out featuring a game called “Sing Me An Emoji,” and thank goodness it didn’t require singing, but the sheet had 15 lines with emojis on each, and you had to guess what each one represented as a holiday song. Lots of fun, lots of laughter!
With nothing further to discuss since this was a party meeting, Jennifer adjourned with a note to remember that the January meeting will be discussing and working on prizes and decorating for the February Joint Meeting which we are hosting.
If I may, I’d like to leave you with a wish that you had the merriest and most blessed of Christmases and that you have the happiest and most healthy new year possible!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God bless America, and God bless the City of Hammond!
