In the wonderfully cool breezes of the first noticeable Autumn weather the members of the Hammond Garden Club sat serenely or meandered about the lovely pavilion in the side yard of Lee Collins home and Bed and Breakfast. Soon there was the tingling of the Parliamentarian's bell (Peggy Dunn) for all to be seated.
Mary Thornhill President called the meeting to order, asking Chaplain Paulette Hebert to lead us in prayer and the Pledge. A hush came upon the crowd after the prayer as all noticed there was no flag. Not to be outdone Lee hurried to her front porch, grabbed the flag and pole, and marched down the sidewalk proudly holding "Old Glory" flying in the breeze as the members began "I pledge allegiance..."!
Mary announced that we would partake of the peak experience that was coming from the aroma of Marilyn's Catering before the onset of the meeting. The awareness of the fragrant golden brown baked chicken, the mashed potatoes full of seasonings, green beans loaded with bacon and
crispy Caesar salad led you to believe something great was in store. Don't know what the cake was called but it had a marvelous almond flavoring, white butter cream icing with strawberries and blueberries on top and between the layers...scrumptious!
The delicious luncheon accomplished, Mary announced that the minutes by Secretary
Karen Granier had been emailed to the Executive Board and approved; she asked for a motion to accept which was given by myself, Linda Broussard and seconded by Margaret Hawkins, all were in favor.
Mary then called on Phyllis diBenedetto for the Treasurer's report, Deborah Garafola for the Garden of the Month for October reportedly went to Evette and Jerry Dellucky and her Mother Adrian. The house and gardens are on 42401 Forest Lane. Carolyn Schwebel said that September's Garden of the Month which didn't get reported last month at the Tea went to our President-Elect Shirley Pellichino at 14070 Hoffman Road. Both reported that the gardens at each of the homes were beautiful. Jewel Jamal said that the Link Award was awarded to Captain D's.
Glenda Nelson reported that there will be a Keep Hammond Beautiful Meeting on October 13 from 8 to 10 am at the Martin Luther King Park. Linda Ryan reported that the Men's Club of the Ponchatoula First United Methodist Church were having a Fish Fry as a fundraiser for "Coats for Kids" Thursday, October 25, from 11am to 1pm at FUMC, call Linda Ryan or Carolyn Schwebel.
All normal reports given Mary called on Linda Ryan, member and speaker for today's meeting. Linda delivered some great information about planting bulbs such as daffodils, narcissus, ranunculus, anemones, etc. She said that tulip and hyacinth bulbs must be refrigerated 6 weeks before planting in November or December and that we should wait a little bit longer to plant pansies, it needs to be a little cooler. Fertilizer that's best for all of them is blood or bone meal. She also brought many Pine Cone Ginger plants that she had pulled up from her garden before coming, gave directions for planting them and gave them away as door prizes as well as the potted yellow, rust and orange potted chrysanthemums supplied by the hostesses.
Mary mentioned that we would change the order of the drinks provided for the catered lunches to now be supplied by the hostesses. She said to save the receipts and you will be reimbursed by the Treasurer. She also announced that March 21, 2019 the Covington Garden Club would be hosting a Style Show at the Tchefuncte Country Club. Tickets would be available at a later date. And lastly all those going to the LGCF District VI Meeting and Luncheon October 23 will meet in the parking lot at Dillards at 9:45 am. She then adjourned the meeting.
It was so great getting together with all of our friends once again, it makes me think of something St. Thomas Aquinas once said, "Friendship is the source of the greatest pleasures, and without friends even the most agreeable pursuits become tedious!" Friends are just the best!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God bless Hammond and God bless America!
