Wish I could say this has been a wonderful Spring but I think we could all say we are really sick and tired of this rain. It’s most important for those of us in the garden club to want everything to look pretty and green but…the green is becoming what grows on refrigerated two week old food, it’s called mold! But as I look out of my window I see drying out wind! The weather man says it should last a week! BUT at the same time he talks about these things down in the Gulf that are spelled HURRICANES COMING!
We mustn’t think about such things when I have so much to tell you about our May meeting and how great it was. Our speaker for the day was Cindy Moran, President of the Baton Rouge Garden Club and member of the American Begonia Society and will be our next District Director. She spoke to us about caladiums since it is one of the plants she knows so much about. The kind to buy, whether they like the sun or shade, what to feed them. What makes them thrive the most is in moist, well drained ground with some sun but prefer partial shade. She talked about the history of them being in the family of Araceae and were started for the purpose of breeding of which she had a picture of an original caladium. She was thanked for her presentation and given a token of appreciation from the club.
Before our speaker was introduced by Linda Ryan, President, Sue Parrill called the meeting to order and asked Chaplain Gayle Bornholdt to lead us in prayer and then the membership rose to say the beautiful Pledge of Allegiance.
She then announced that the minutes of the last meeting were distributed to the members prior to the meeting and upon motions they had been unanimously approved as presented.
Treasurer Phyllis DiBenedetto presented the Treasurer’s Report and it was accepted as read and a copy was attached to the minutes.
Before the meeting resumed we were served whatever lunch we had chosen from the menu at Oak Knoll Country Club with Mary Monteleon and her band of terrific wait staff serving us.
When all couldn’t eat another bite Sue announced, “We are having two members that are becoming stars…..in our eyes anyway”! Linda Ryan and Pat Graves have won the First Place Blue Ribbon for three years in a row at Art in Bloom at City Park’s Museum of Art 2021 Event. There are many divisions and their division was Garden Clubs and they won in the class of “Perfect Mass Design”. Congratulations ladies! That arrangement was gorgeous!
Pat Graves reported that she had post cards printed for the members for the purpose of promoting gardening to help make our City of Hammond beautiful. The cards are so pretty and each member was given a few to place at the residence that you might drive past that looks particularly lovely. It’s a small gesture to let people know their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. You may sign the card and put your phone number if you wish and let them know that the Hammond Garden Club appreciates their help in making their city a place where others may want to reside.
At this time Phyllis Mire discussed her applicant for membership into our club, Dona Calcote. We had been introduced to Dona at a few meetings she is Phyllis’s neighbor. Following a discussion Dona Calcote was unanimously approved by the membership to become a member of the Hammond Garden Club.
Several other guests joined us at our meeting and were also asking about becoming members. They were Hunter Black guest of Kathleen Bohlinger; Robin Fuller guest of McKayla Helms and Kelly Koziol guest of Pat Graves.
Five lucky ladies won some very pretty plants of door prizes: Hunter Black, Peggy Dunn, Linda Ryan, Phyllis DiBenedetto and Kelly Koziol. They were provided by the hostesses Linda Broussard, Deborah Garafola, Susie Ivanyisky, Phyllis Mire and Karen Nelson.
I had this in a Newsletter that some ladies reading this may remember but I think it is worth repeating because I think it is what the garden club is all about: “Nothing is more beautiful than someone who goes out of her way to make life beautiful for others,” by Mandy Hale.
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God Bless the City of Hammond and God Bless America!
