President regales club with wealth of info
With the exception of paying our taxes this is a slowing down period, a new start of the year ahead of us after all the excitement from the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's celebrations! Do hope everyone enjoyed their holidays, have taken down their tree(s) and decorations and are ready to settle into their New Year's resolutions, (hopefully they haven't been broken already)!
Carolyn Schwebel, President of the Hammond Garden Club, opened our January meeting, held at Murphy's Restaurant, (always delicious), with asking us to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and then called on Mary Thornhill, Chaplain for the invocation.
Carolyn then called upon Margaret Hawkins to introduce our speaker James Campbell who is the President of the American Camellia Society and resides in Covington. Mr. Campbell regaled us with a wealth of information about camellias. The differences in a Sasanqua, a Japonica and a Camellia, the different ways to propagate them by seed, air layering and grafting, how to plant to keep them from being water logged, the diseases they can encounter and the thousands of varieties there are, even one grown in Hammond named after Dr. Kingsley and most important is they can live for 600 years!!!
Mr. Campbell had a slide show presentation that gave us a small idea of how many beautiful species there actually are, one more gorgeous than the next. A question and answer session ensued with even more information about the beautiful camellias! As our President said, "If you don't already grow them after his talk you will want to"!
Our speaker for the meeting had finished and lunch was served to the enjoyment of all attending. While we were partaking our epicurean delights Carolyn was giving out some information and also asking about the Link and Garden of the Month Awards which have not been awarded as yet for January.
She said that the books that had been donated at our Christmas luncheon for the Springfield library that flooded in August she had labeled "Donated by the Hammond Garden Club", divided and put into age groups, boxed and are ready to go to the school as soon as those coming from the ones that are being donated at Bayou Booksellers and a few more from members of the HGC.
She also called on Mary Thornhill, chairperson for Arbor Day, that announced the planting of the walnut tree at the Post Office will take place on January 21 at 10:00 AM and Cub Scout Pack 170 led by Barry Chance will be with us to partake in the celebration.
Next person needed was Glenda Nelson with information about Keep Hammond Beautiful pick-up day which is the same day as Arbor Day! We will meet at Cate Square Park at the Gazebo. As Glenda said you may not be able to pick up trash but you can help giving out gloves, vests, pick-up sticks and we can walk from the gazebo right over to the Post Office for planting of the tree, since it is from 8 to 10 and the tree planting starts at 10:00.....perfect timing and hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate!
Next member with information was Shirley Pellichino who was gathering information on magnetized badges which we have wanted to wear on our new club shirts. It was voted on and decided to get them from A-1 in Ponchatoula for an affordable price and the voted on choice of color was gold.
Carolyn stated the Joint Meeting being held in Amite at the Florida Parishes Arena, 11:00 AM on February 8th by the Stem and Stamen Garden Club has recently been changed to February 15 same time same place. We will meet at Dillard's parking lot as usual and leave promptly at 10:15 so we can car pool.
Carolyn also said we have been invited to the Covington Garden Club's Style Show on April 20 which we will discuss at our next meeting.
New information was given by Juanita Pearson about a flower show being held March through May at Disney World in Orlando, FL.....or.....we could see about the Chelsea Flower Show in London, England! Now that is what I call a road trip to the utmost degree! This too will be discussed at our next meeting!
No more news to present Carolyn closed the meeting and pulled names for the door prizes, beautiful potted plants all different varieties that went to: Gayle Bornholdt, Lee Collins, Johanna Dagro, Deborah Garafola, Karen Granier, Pat Graves and Karen Nelson.
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI Garden Club Federation and the Deep South Region of the National Garden Clubs doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability! God Bless America!
