Well the Hammond Garden Club is back with a bang! We had our August President’s Tea going over all the exciting things that will be happening this year with our club. So many plans, so many kudos to all involved in this past year’s activities, the fun we’ve already had and all that is ahead of us in the future!
Our President Carolyn Schwebel opened the meeting asking all to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and requested our Chaplain Mary Thornhill to lead us in prayer.
She asked that we partake of the fantastic buffet table provided by the ladies of the Executive Board since our speaker was running late. She also said because this wasn’t a regular meeting all reports would be forgiven.
The table was beautifully decorated with a gorgeous orange, green, and white arrangement in a brass pelican we have lovingly named “Huey” from Phyllis Mire, flowers from Glenda Nelson’s yard and arranged by Lee Collins - we believe in working together using everyones talents!
The comestibles were everything from soup to nuts, (not really - just a figure of speech). But there were tea sandwiches, chicken salad croissants, salads, casseroles, deviled eggs, dips and chips and a wonderful coffee punch that has become a staple at our events. There were desserts of all kinds chocolate brownies, peach cobbler and Philly Delights! I think everyone was “delighted” with their luncheon.
Our speaker Nancy Delahaye from the Plaquemine Garden Club, our new District VI Director was introduced by Carolyn. She spoke about her theme this year “Deep Roots…Strong Growth” and encouraged all of us to purchase a copy of a book “The Saved Seed” which is for elementary children and a great book for our Books and Library Committee.
She thanked us for hosting the District VI Fall Meeting at Michabelle Inn on Oct. 24th after which forms were distributed for each member to fill out and turn in before the Oct. deadline.
Besides hosting the Fall Meeting we will be having another catered Fish Fry in the fall as our fundraiser along with our usual fun activities during the holidays.
Carolyn then proceeded with accolades for all. First little gifts for all those in perfect attendance for all meetings, about ten of us. Then it was praise to her Executive Board for all their special assistance during the last three years of her tenure as president.
She then thanked Glenda Nelson and Phyllis Mire for their accomplishments with the Cleanest City marvelous scrapbook, and Sue Parrill for the History Scrapbook which will go in the Southeastern University Archives.
An expression of gratitude went to Karen Nelson for the spectacular work on this years club’s yearbook and the many year’s previous books.
Glenda Nelson was thanked for her dedication and involvement in Keep Hammond Beautiful, Margaret Hawkins for the emails letting all of us know where to go for meetings, to buy flowers, etc. To Linda Broussard for her dedication even during illness to get those Daily Star columns out and to all members that held jobs as committee chairs or are members of each committee.
As the applause died down from all the gratitude given to others, Helen Tallo stood up to say, “The most applause goes to our President Carolyn for her commitment, leadership and enthusiasm holding the job as our President," and it was met with a thunderous round of approval!
Carolyn thanked everyone and said that this is her last year so she wanted all of us to be thinking who they wanted for our next president.
She also added that we have a real problem, but what a problem to have! We just can’t accept any more members at this time. It is getting harder and harder to find a venue to hold our meetings…and almost impossible to have them in anyones home. We will have to keep a chronological list of those that want to join and as we lose a member we will call the first on the list.
As all the applause, gratitude and kudos died down we pulled numbers for door prizes and the lucky winners went home with precious red penta plants.
It is the beginning of our new year, old friendships renewed and lots of fun once again. Hope to see all my faithful Daily Star readers next month to find out what’s going on with the ladies of the Hammond Garden Club.
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability.
God Bless America!!!
