The very best project that the Hammond Garden Club undertakes and makes its members so proud is giving a Southeastern Louisiana University student a Scholarship Award, money to be able to complete their studies. They must fill out a form and write a letter describing their needs, what subjects they are undertaking and they must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
Caleb Charpentier filled all those requirements and then some. He also has some significant financial burdens, unable to be fulfilled (for health reasons), by his parents and the subjects he is studying, which are indirectly associated with plant life, are Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
On campus Caleb works as a researcher in a computational phylogenetics lab and through working in the lab he has learned to program in three languages and has made a software called RevR that will be very useful to scientists doing phylogenetics research. After graduation he plans to do research as a Ph.D. student.
He said while working in the lab is a wonderful research opportunity it only pays just above minimum wage which won’t support the purchase of, and insurance for, an automobile needed for an off campus job when he graduates. So he was really thrilled and said that this scholarship would tremendously relieve his financial burden and he would be able to devote more time to his studies.
We as members of the HGC are also thrilled to make Caleb Charpentier the recipient of our annual scholarship award and can’t think of a more deserving student.
It was a wonderful opening held at the newly renovated Oak Knoll Country Club for the President’s Luncheon after Mary Thornhill had asked the Blessing for all not able to attend and those suffering from the COVID virus after which President Sue Parrill led the Pledge of Allegiance.
At the beginning as we each walked in masked Mary Monteleone and her crew had clothed the tables with long white tablecloths, decorated for the summer with beautiful greenery wreaths around which were bowls of wonderful spinach and strawberry salad and soon they were placing small bowls of spicy sausage and chicken gumbo, iced tea and water and delicious cheese cake with strawberries on top…mmm good! Awesome for a summer luncheon!
Most of the normal order of business was dispensed with except Kathleen Bohlinger told us about a prospective member for our club that we met at the last meeting. Pat Graves reported that she has had good luck with having the businesses in the first blocks of Thomas Street to have large containers of flowers that the city has planted and they will take care of watering.
Pat also told us about the Art In Bloom project that is going to be a gigantic scheme and will be held primarily at the Columbia Theater. It will include a Patron Party for all the contributors on the first night, there will be painted art that others will be making arrangements to go with, there will be one act plays, three act plays and much, much more all in April 2022. So keep your eyes open for more to come…this is going to be wonderful!
Deborah Garafola has constructed a Publicity Scrapbook that is awesome! So very pretty and so well done! I hope it is being sent in for an award Deb!
And I think the last thing so worthy of mentioning is our great 2021/2022 Yearbooks! Thanks to the hard work of Karen Nelson, once again we have THE BEST Yearbook of any club! And should get an award too!
I pray that all of you are staying safe, getting vaccinations if you want them and wearing a mask if you don’t! I also hope you haven’t had friends and relatives that have had to spend time in the hospital and that they are home once again or soon will be. I hope the good Lord will keep us blanketed in His arms through this virus and hurricane season.
Peace be with everyone. The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God Bless the City of Hammond and God Bless America!
