On a bright October morn where we could just begin to feel the briskness of Autumn trickling into our usual muggy Louisiana weather, the members of the Hammond Garden Club flowed into the door of the Oak Knoll Country club where Mary Monteleone, General Manager had decorated the main dining room with wonderful shades of Autumn, all things in earth tones. There were fat orange pumpkins and leaves of scarlet, golden and rusty brown scattered around the table arrangements of the same fall colors all perched on top of a deep orange table runner. Even if the temperature outside being less than perfect, inside we felt a fall chill in the air!
President Sue Parrill called the meeting to order and asked Chaplain Gayle Bornholdt to open with a prayer after which the membership recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Sue then called on Linda Ryan our "Artiste in Residence". She is a Master Designer and President of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Flower Show Judges Council. She gave a demonstration on "Spatial Thrust Design". For those of you that don't know (as many of us in the garden club didn't), it is a Creative Design in which two parallel placements (lines) of like materials are used to define a volume of vacant space, creating a feeling of thrust. Thrust may be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. One line may be longer than the other for interest and balance.
It was beautiful consisting of Stargazer Lilies and Carnival Roses, a mixture of deep pink and rosy red with white branches being used as the "Spatial Thrust". The flamingo pink vase was a spectacular addition to the arrangement.
The President announced that everyone had received a copy of the minutes by secretary Karen Granier and asked if there were any additions or deletions, motion was made to accept and all were in favor. She then asked for the Treasurer Phyllis diBenedetto for her report, a motion was made to accept and all were in favor.
The Garden of the Month was announced by Clara Houston that was given to Deborah and Roy Landry at 710 South Holly Street and Linda Ross announced the winner of the Link Award was The Burns Estate Planning and Wealth Advisors at 1607 Southwest Railroad Avenue.
Sue then asked if there were any other announcements which Glenda Nelson for Keep Hammond Beautiful said that Councilman Kip Andrews District (that she said was doing a great job) was going to have another Pick-Up at Martin Luther King Park on November 7 from 9:30 AM to 12 Noon. She asked for all volunteers please come.
Lunch was then served which we each had chosen from a menu given us during the past week to make our choices. I heard many as I walked around that the lunches were delicious, I know mine was!
Another tidbit I heard was from Margaret Hawkins who was so glad we had our meeting at Oak Knoll Country Club since they had had an art show and hanging all around the walls were many paintings...one especially was hers and she had won a "People's Choice" Award. We are so proud for you Margaret!
Our second meeting of the year and we will all be so glad when we won't have to wear these masks, when no one will have to be afraid they will get the virus, when there isn't another political ad on TV again.....when we can all go back to a normal world we hope and pray!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs,Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God Bless the City of Hammond and God Bless America!
