Hot summer vacation is over for HGC
Ah, summer! And WOW have we had a hot one. I don’t think in my 82 years of existence on this planet have I felt, endured or sweat as I have this one. Never this many 100-plus degrees in a month, never so many records broken!
It is phenomenal that we have been able to award Garden of the Month in the months of June, July and especially August. Hopefully you have seen the earlier pictures sent in to the Daily Star for the Ancelets in Audubon Lakes in August, the Turner’s cottage garden on West Michigan Street in July and the Dileos in Villa West Subdivision in June.
They have been absolutely beautiful and must really be congratulated to be able to have green grass or trees, much less lovely crayon rouged blooms in their gardens!
We are especially thankful to all the members of the Garden of the Month Committee who searched for those who did receive the awards since so many of our lawns and gardens are sporting the color of “parched brown.” Most of the Garden Club activities are closed for the summer.
BUT…we are back and ready to see some powerfully gorgeous gardens beginning next month…Ah the coolness of FALL!
Upon entering the Oak Knoll Country Club there were several things all members signed up for, including the new yearbooks which we’re always so eager to see; they were fantastic, put together by our Vice President Karen Nelson. We signed for those and signed in the book itself in case of loss, and then signed up for door prizes – beautiful Gerbera daisies provided by member Juanita Pearson.
We began our usual August President’s Luncheon where we all met and enjoyed a buffet of choice of soup, tomato basil or baked potato, and a most delectable chicken salad filled with chicken (of course), sweet green grapes, crunchy celery, pecans and mayo on a bed of chopped romaine lettuce, with scrumptious strawberry shortcake for dessert.
It was perfect, as usual, and just the best for a light, cool summer’s luncheon. Thanks again to Mary Monteleone and her crew.
President Jennifer Allen opened the meeting by asking Chaplain Mary Thornhill for a prayer and then an all-members recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. As I mentioned above, we are on vacation during the months of June through August, so with no old business to discuss, I’m skipping to all the wonderful things we have in store for our club this year.
There will be speakers for almost all the meetings except the one which is going to be our day trip to Biloxi/Ocean Springs for lunch at McElroy’s, then off to Courtney Farms Nursery. The other will be our installation of officers. But besides those two, we will be hearing speakers tell us all about butterflies, tulips, floral design, edible flowers, etc.
This year it is our turn to host the joint meeting of the area garden clubs which will be held at Oak Knoll Country Club, and I’m not going to divulge the theme just yet, but I will let the members know that the rest of the meetings will be WORKING MEETINGS to get ready for that big joint meeting!
Well, fellow gardeners, I will leave you with an anonymous note found in one of my favorite magazines. If you’re a volunteer at Fuller Shop you may have already seen it. I find it very poignant for this club and for the things going on in the world about us today. Enjoy!
“We have a vision of this land of ours to create something where we can come together around shared interests and loves. It’s the persistence, the resiliency, and the passion that separates us from everyone else.”
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God bless the City of Hammond, and God bless America!
