Thanksgiving Blessings and Christmas Planning
What a busy schedule there is for all the members of the Hammond Garden Club at this time of year! Even our meeting was lots of business, lots of plans of upcoming events and most of all lots of fun in the process! But before we began the meeting there was a line getting the scrumptious meal Marilyn’s Catering had prepared for us. Some of the most tender beef roast in velvety brown gravy with little orange carrots and white potatoes, satiny smooth macaroni and cheese with soft little green peas and the best apple crunch our mouths have ever tasted!
Our meeting started as usual with Chaplain Paulette Hebert that always puts into words a beautiful prayer for those of us attending and also for those that couldn’t be with us that day. And then our voices in a strong rendering of that wonderful Pledge of Allegiance so very important as we are about to vote into office some of those that are going to be leading our state and our cities.
The President Mary Thornhill then called on Secretary Karen Granier whose report had been sent to all as an email and there were no additions or deletions and the Treasurer’s report which was given by Vice President Shirley Pellichino in Phyllis diBenedetto’s absence. It was also stated that the Fish Fry had been a wonderful success and great as a fund raiser for our annual scholarship.
Mary then called on anyone that had a report to give or information on coming events. The Garden of the Month report was given by Carolyn Todd our District VI Director and the award went to Carl and Beryl Hargis in Oak Creek Subdivision and as reported by member Linda Ross the Link Award will start soon.
Linda also has been involved with The Nutcracker Christmas musical for many years and she said that the annual Nutcracker Tea will be held this year at The Oaks in Ponchatoula on December 8 and tickets were $30.00 each.
Member Katherine Yeargin, Chairperson for Books and Library announced that she and her committee had chosen the book Louisiana Wildflower Guide by Charles Allen. Library Director Barry Bradford and Assistant Director Bianca Roberts were presented with the donation.
Carolyn Todd spoke to the members about meetings that were coming up, District VI and LGCF, one in 2020 and one in 2021 and volunteers for many different things would be needed. It doesn’t have to be any big job, maybe you know the name of a place that the meeting could be held or what might be a good menu for one of the days of the meetings, or a speaker that would be interesting. It’s so much fun meeting new people when you get involved in planning things you’ve never done before she said.
Glenda Nelson announced that there would be a Cleanest City pick up meeting at the MLK Park on December 7, to please come and help make our city litter free.
The floor was then turned over to member Linda Ryan, the person with ideas that pop out of her head like magic! If someone gave her a ball of cotton and a paper bag she could make an elaborate arrangement fit for a palace table! We all desire to have a mind just like that! So when she laid these shriveled up garlands, some 57 cents strings of lights, spools and spools of gold, silver and white netting, bunches of gold, silver and white pearls…and said “OK everyone over here and let’s get to work making these garlands look like something fit for beautiful golden braided strands to line the railings of the gazebo in Cate Square Park for Christmas”!
Soon there were busy little bees doing as she instructed! Some fluffing garlands, some braiding the spools of netting in 12’ lengths, others were wrapping little white lights around the garland, some were using the 12” tiles on the floor to measure the 12’ lengths of netting. Wow what you can accomplish when everyone works together and in such a short time.
There were 12 garlands all wrapped in beautifully braided netting and lights, enhanced with the bunches of pearls of gold and silver!!! Gorgeous!!! Now we can’t wait to see the finished product in the gazebo. Then on to lunch at Lee’s Diner, after which it’s on to North Oaks to decorate trees…so much accomplished, so much fun! What a great bunch of ladies we have, all willing to pitch in to make places in our city look like a Christmas Wonderland!
Before I get ahead of myself, we, the ladies of the Hammond Garden Club wish each and everyone of you a most Blessed Thanksgiving spent with loved ones all around us and the biggest, golden brown turkey stuffed with luscious savory dressing and all the side dishes your heart desires. And oh my! don’t forget the apple, pumpkin and pecan pies for dessert, with many thanks to the good Lord above that we live in the most wonderful country in the world!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God Bless America!
