What a busy month for the ladies of Hammond Garden Club! Hope no one gets tired of hearing that this is our busy time! But the cooler weather with all it's compliments of beautiful fall colors, the huge orange pumpkins, gorgeous yellow and rust chrysanthemums and the impending thoughts of turkey roasting to a golden brown in our ovens very soon makes this busy season very bearable!
Our first order of business was of course our regular meeting which was held at the lovely home of Lee Collins...one of the fewer venues where we can hold a meeting that is large enough to hold our whole club, (what a terrible problem to have.....we are so blessed)!
The meeting was catered by Marilyn's Catering whom we have used many times and have never been disappointed, from salad to dessert, it's always wonderful and no one goes away hungry.
After filling ourselves to overflowing, our President, Carolyn Schwebel began our meeting by calling on her officers for reports...Secretary-Karen Granier said the Executive Board had read and approved the minutes and Juanita Pearson in Phyllis diBenedetto's absence gave the Treasurer's Report.
She then called on reports from Garden of the Month-Joy Peterson said the award went to Steve and Tiny Leon at #5 Audubon Place in Longue Leaf and Linda Ross said the Link Award went to Bodden Orthodontics on Spruce Street.
Everyone congratulated Carolyn for accepting the job as District Director for the LGCF and Carolyn announced that Peggy Dunn is the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and with that announcement Peg gave us a rundown of the criteria for the coming scholarships. Jennifer Allen and Brenda Daussat will also be on that committee. Carolyn reminded us of the Christmas party at Michabelle Inn to have our money in by December 7 because of them needing a head count.
Next on the agenda was information for the decor for the Patriot Ball which the garden club had been asked to make the decorations. Our "head honcho floral director" Phyllis Mire decided on large shiny royal blue stars centered on top of white table cloths with red carnations, white mums and greenery in white bowls centered on the stars for the table decorations and red, white and blue buntings to hang all around the top railing of the Event Center. These ideas came from our "artistes' in residence" Phyllis Mire and Linda Ryan and they along with Juanita Pearson and Sylvia Dileo made a road trip to New Orleans on Thursday to get all the flowers.
On Friday the day before the Ball a group of us, the road trip crew and Karen Nelson, Lee Collins, Melinda Holloway from SELMO and myself got together in Karen Nelson's garage for short lessons from Phyllis and Linda.
In a few hours we had put together 32 bouquets! It was a lot of hard work (well for some of us it was), lots of wondering if we were going to make it, two trips out for more flowers when we found out the number of tables had gone from 25 to 32 and lots and lots of laughter! No matter how hard the work, it's always made easier when done with the help of good friends! I can't think of one time getting together with garden club friends that hasn't been anything but fun!
I hope you were able to make the Patriot Ball...not only were the decorations fantastic but the entertainment (The Victory Belles from the World War ll Museum in New Orleans) was spectacular! Sam Dileo, Roy Blackwood, Rich Ludwig and George Will just to name a few did a stupendous job of putting on a show so richly deserved for our veterans! We were so happy to do our part for them also!
That's it for November folks! Now it's on to December and all the decorations for Christmas! But let's not forget the holiday soon to be here that reminds us how much we have to be thankful for, how many blessings we have been endowed with. One extra blessing I have to mention is for all my garden club friends...what would I do without them!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God Bless America!
I truly hope everyone has a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!
