Hammond Garden Club plans Mardi Gras-themed Joint Meeting
It’s Saturday, I’m looking out my window at my desk typing this column, and I’m thinking what beautiful weather we have been having … and then I think about the weather report I saw last night!
I hope that my garden that looks like “spring has sprung” with all the little lavender, what I call rain flowers, that are interspersed throughout against the rough brick wall, a simply gorgeous bright orange gerbera daisy, Shi Shi hot pink camellias whose blooms are covering the damp brown pine straw below them, some snow-white azaleas whose blooms are beginning to get a tinge of tan on their perfectly shaped edges and my stately red maple which must have hundreds of tiny leaf buds popping out, and I wonder what the great northerner whose blast of frozen rain and extremely low temps are coming will do to all that beauty! Sure wish Mother Nature would have known that this was going to happen!
I’m praying, and I think back some years ago that something similar did occur unexpectedly, and that the flowers were more prolific, more lovely than ever that spring. Somehow I have to keep reminding myself that we have an awesome God that works hand in hand with Mother Nature, and together they know what they are doing.
I do hope that everyone remembered what to do about covering those plants or bringing them inside if you can, wrapping the pipes, and bringing those fur babies inside – they are one of the best parts of our families!
Last Wednesday we had our monthly meeting, and this one was a business meeting. Therefore, we had no speaker to show us how to make things from practically nothing from materials out of our yards, or show us films from trips made to other parts of our world.
It was about what is coming up in the life of Hammond Garden Club!
It began as usual as our President Jennifer Allen opened the meeting by asking our Chaplain Mary Thornhill to lead us in prayer and asked that we stand to reverently say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Since the minutes are emailed to the members and approved online Jennifer then asked Treasurer Phyllis diBenedetto for her report, which was given.
She then asked Chairperson Carolyn Todd to whom the award for Garden of the Month was given. Carolyn stated that it had been given to Ricky and Jessica Masaracchia of Colorado Avenue and replied that it was absolutely beautiful, with so many colorful flowers. They told her that he had been given the same award 30 years ago when he lived on Morris Avenue. She said we should try to drive by to see their beautiful yards.
Jennifer then asked for a report from Linda Ross on Link Award and one from Glenda Nelson on Keep Hammond Beautiful; neither was given since both members were out of town. Both members said that the information would be elsewhere in the Daily Star when they returned.
We did not get those two reports today, but Jennifer then called on Pat Graves and Linda Ryan for their report on what the HGC has coming up on Feb. 7 which is the District VI Joint Meeting. The Hammond Garden Club hosts this year.
I can’t tell you all that it’s about because we want to keep that as a secret! But ... I can tell you that the theme is going to be Mardi Gras! There’s going to be a DJ with lots of Mardi Gras music, and we will all be in costume and hope the other club members will be also (it’s so much more fun if you do)!
There will be floats (but I can’t tell you what will be on them), there will be a New Orleans-themed buffet, a second line for sure (no telling who is going to lead it), and you might see a queen or two! Oh my, I hope I haven’t told you too much.
So come on down, Belle Oaks Garden Club, Gardenettes Garden Club, and Stem and Stamen Garden Clubs, and let us show you a good time. ”Laissez les bons temps rouler!”
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God bless America, and God bless the City of Hammond!
