State Cleanest City Award
On Wednesday June 7 in the year of Our Lord 2017.....the City of Hammond was presented the State Cleanest City Award for the ELEVENTH YEAR in a row! "It is unheard of for any city/garden club to win this award this many times in succession," said Jean Gilstrap, State Cleanest City Chairman.
But as Mayor Panepinto said we have won because of the hard work of the many organizations, the city workers at the Department of Streets picking up every day, the city crew led by Whitney Statham that keep all the flower pots and beds furnished with such beautifully, colorful flowers. It is by the relentless volunteer work of the Keep Hammond Beautiful organization, the many individuals who stop on roadsides daily picking up trash whenever they spy something thrown out of a car window.
And then there is the awesome Hammond Garden Club scrapbook that is tended all year by Glenda Nelson with art work by Phyllis Mire, both are members of the HGC and the scrapbook adds points to our score.
Mayor Panepinto congratulated all that were involved in helping the city get and keep this coveted award for so many years. But.....we were told by Jean Gilstrap that this coming year's competition had some added rules that will make it a little harder. There will be no route for the judges to follow, they can ride anywhere in the city to judge the contest....WOW!
Sooo, we will have to be even more vigilant, we must get the word out to those who think nothing of throwing a cigarette butt on the ground, a wrapper from a fast food hamburger and even trash and cans on their own lawns.
We must make it more desirable for businesses to keep their entrances and parking lots trash free. Could we possibly teach smokers to field dress their cigarettes like they do in the military and put their filters in their pockets till emptying them in a proper trash can? Can we require each business to provide a smoker's ashtray at the entrance to their property?
I guess it all comes down to respect.....respect your elders, respect your teachers, respect your self and your home and respect for the city and state you live, work and play in by doing all that you can to keep our God given country pristine clean! That's how we can win the 12th year in a row!
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of the District VI Garden Club Federation and the Deep South Region of the National Garden Clubs doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability.
God bless Hammond, LA and God bless America!
