Arbor Day Celebration With Hammond Garden Club
Because of all things that had their proper dates changed due to Covid this year so did the Arbor Day planting for the Hammond Garden Club take place in the month of March instead of January. But it was on a beautiful sunshine day when President Sue Parrill and Committee Chair Kathleen Bohlinger went to Trafton Academy and met with the Principal Susan Day and her husband who volunteered to dig the holes to plant the trees.
As we went outdoors we also met with Ms. Melissa Parkinson and her Preschool precocious little children all excited to see what was about to happen. Two of the trees, a pecan and a peach, were donated by Dr. Allen Owings at the HGC November meeting and the other, a red oak, was donated by member Linda Ryan from her garden. As the children gathered round first the peach tree, boys on one side, girls on the other, the peach was in full bloom and the girls naturally being drawn to the beautiful flowers wanted very badly to pick them but were quickly admonished by their teacher.
One by one the trees were put into their holes, covered with soil and the children had been given information by their teacher before attending the Arbor Day celebration about the planting and how the trees were to be taken care of.
The Hammond Garden Club is a proud member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. doing our best to unify and beautify our homes, gardens, our city and our nation every day to the best of our ability. God Bless Hammond and God Bless America!
