THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2015 THE DAILY STAR, HAMMOND, LA
Louisiana Garden Club Federation Cleanest City Contest representatives came to Hammond recently to present accolades for the city’s 9th in a row Cleanest City win. Members of Keep Hammond Beautiful and the Hammond Garden Club, along with Mayor Pete Panepinto and former Mayor Mayson Foster, met the judges for the awards presentation at City Council Chambers. Hammond earned four awards total, one for the Cleanest City in the entire state, where Hammond earned the highest score ever earned in Hammond from the judges, and one was for winning the Cleanest City competition for nine consecutive years. Panepinto praised the work of the City’s Parks and Grounds and Streets Departments. “The people in those departments work day and night picking up trash, cleaning ditches and storm drains, planting flowers and mowing grass. Their hard work pays off big in competitions like these and when new residents and businesses come to town,” Panepinto said. He also complimented E.J. Forgotson and Tangi Clean, as well as Barbara McKaskle and other women that organized the first cleanups. “It’s their spirit and ongoing dedication that make us shine,” he said.” Cleanest City representative Jean Gilstrap said Hammond also earned the highest score this year than any city has ever scored in the history of the competition. “I brag on y’all all the time,” she said. “If you want to see how to do it, go to Hammond.” Jeanette Gatzman, the new Louisiana Garden Club Federation president, said she was in Hammond for the first time and was impressed with its cleanliness and beauty even on a non-judging day. Keep Hammond Beautiful Presidnet Vic Couvillion said that Hammond’s success “comes from the coalition among Keep Hammond Beautiful, the Hammond Garden Club, local schools and volunteers.” He spoke about the educational efforts of KHB members taking environmental models and activity sheets into the schools. Gatzman said these efforts as “good because they start with educating children who will teach their families.” it. |
