Mayor Pete Panepinto, the Hammond Garden Club, Vic Couvillion of Keep Hammond Beautiful, the citizens of Hammond that have volunteered to help clean the city, the city workers Whitney Statham, Lacey Landrum, Dori St. Cyr and Alma Mitchell, Phyllis Mire and Glenda Nelson with volunteers that worked on the scrapbook with members of the HGC and the real backbone of it all are the strong city workers out there every day and many other individuals that stop mid traffic to pick up trash on busy highways, all.....all have reason to be extremely proud.....for 10 years in a row the City of Hammond has garnered the Category H Cleanest City Award, not only for District but for State also!! It is unheard of according to the judges for any city to have won it for10 years.....especially 10 consecutive years!!
As Jean Gilstrap the LA Garden Club Federations' chairperson addressed the attendees at the ceremony she said, "I didn't want anyone to think that it is only on "the route" that she and the other judges have looked for trash; we have viewed other areas as we arrived in the city and the cleanliness is also spreading to all the other parts of your town. There is a lot for the citizens of this beautiful city to be proud of and so many people to thank for a job well done", as she handed the plaque to Mayor Panepinto. Cameras and smiles flashed as he thanked everyone calling by name all that were instrumental in receiving this coveted award.
All of the above listed beginning with the mayor have tried very hard to instill in the citizens of this city to be prideful and show self respect by respecting the city you live in, to be almost arrogant about trash being strewn about and indignant when you see someone throw trash out of a car window or a cigarette butt as you walk down the street. There's no way you can value yourself and not value the ground you walk on enough to keep it trash free. The saying goes "it takes a village to raise a child" and adding to that.....it takes that same village of caring people to make it a beautiful trash free city!!
